Share your views on the forthcoming ISO net zero standard (ISO 14060 - Net Zero Aligned Organizations)

The public consultation for the Draft International Standard (DIS) will open worldwide for 12 weeks this summer. UK stakeholders from across industry, policy, civil society and academia are invited to review and comment on the draft through BSI. Your comments will inform the UK's position and UK vote on the Draft International Standard, ensuring UK stakeholder voices are represented.

Why it matters

Organizations of all sectors and sizes around the world are transforming their business models, building their supply chain resilience, and preparing to seize the opportunities of the global transition to net zero. However, inconsistent approaches and unclear definitions underpinning this transition put organizations at risk of analysis paralysis, greenwashing liability, and slowing collective progress.

The ISO net zero standard will provide a stable, globally consistent framework for credible net zero action that has been developed and agreed through international consensus, helping organizations set clear targets, reduce emissions across their operations and value chains, and take verifiable climate action that stakeholders can trust.

About the international standard

The international net zero standard is being developed based on conversion of the ISO Net Zero Guidelines (IWA 42). Launched by ISO and the UNFCCC High Level Champions in 2022, the Guidelines were developed with input from more than 1200 experts from over 100 countries, offering principles and recommendations to support net zero action. The ISO Net Zero Guidelines are now being converted into the ISO 14060: Net Zero Aligned Organizations, through a multilateral consensus process, offering users measurable, verifiable requirements which can be used to obtain certification to demonstrate your organization’s net zero-aligned status.

The forthcoming ISO net zero standard will:

  • Define credible, science-based pathways to net zero for all sectors and organization sizes
  • Prioritize emission reductions (Scope 1, 2, and 3) over reliance on carbon offsetting
  • Provide a unified, internationally recognized benchmark for voluntary net zero commitments
  • Help organizations demonstrate transparency and accountability in their climate actions
