Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a critical technology to meet net zero, enabling the removal of CO2 emissions, particularly from hard-to-abate sectors where alternative decarbonization solutions are limited.

Appropriate, well-defined, and science-based standards are essential for the safe design, construction, operation, and monitoring of CCS projects.

This Standards Research Report, produced by BSI in partnership with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the UK CCS industry, assesses the current standards landscape for deploying CCS technologies in the UK.

It identifies gaps and priority areas for adapting and developing standards across the entire chain and offers recommendations to government and technical experts to drive progress through new standards.

Essential insights include:

    • 342 Standards Identified: Of these, 170 are highly relevant to CCS systems, while 114 mention related topics but lack a CCS-specific focus.
      • Materials Lead the Way: The largest number of 'fit-for-purpose' standards focus on materials, critical to CCS operations.
        • Measurement Challenges: A lack of universally accepted CO2 stream metering methods results in inconsistent measurement practices across projects.
          • Industry Needs: Specific gaps in CCS standards include CO2 transport integration, offshore transport, site selection, geological characterization, interim storage tanks, and pressure relief valve design.
