Speakers

Seb van Dort
Seb van Dort has a 20-year successful track record in the low-carbon industry, known for driving major policies and initiatives like the Energy Company Obligation, Green Deal, Warm Home Discount, and Smart Meter roll-out. Throughout his career, he has successfully collaborated with government and regulators to facilitate the effective implementation of these programs in various industries, helping to shape the transition towards a sustainable future.
Currently, Seb is the Director for Energy and Sustainability at the British Standards Institution (BSI), engaging with stakeholders across government, industry, and NGOs. He leads BSI's strategy to leverage standards in supporting and accelerating the transition to a more sustainable future, focusing on areas such as sustainable finance, nature-based solutions, biodiversity, renewables, low-carbon technologies, and energy flexibility.
In addition, Seb chairs the National Grid ESO's Data & Technology Advisory Group, supporting the Virtual Energy System—a pioneering data-sharing infrastructure enabling an interconnected ecosystem of digital twins across the energy landscape. This role positions him at the forefront of driving digital transformation within the energy sector.

Dr. Sofia Guerra FREng
Dr. Sofia Guerra FREng is a director at Themistoclea Ltd. She is an internationally recognized expert in the dependability, assurance, and governance of complex digital systems in the nuclear industry. A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, she has spent her career collaborating with the nuclear stakeholders such as the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the International Atomic Energy Agency and several licensees on safety, dependability and licensing of digital systems. She pioneered the UK's approach to justifying digital devices for nuclear facilities and is a recognized expert on AI innovation and governance in nuclear applications. Most recently, she co-authored Fission for Algorithms, a report examining the risks of deploying AI to accelerate nuclear energy development, and serves as an advisor to the AI Now Institute on energy infrastructure and regulatory safety.

Mark Bankhead
24 years’ experience in the nuclear industry, joining BNFL (latterly United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory) in 2002. He is a chemist with a PhD in computational catalysis from the University of Bath. His core expertise is in the simulation of the chemistry of materials (density functional theory and molecular dynamics) and he currently leads a team of chemists, engineers and physicists who provide consulting services supporting the UK's mission in reactor new build and clean up. He also acts as a cross-disciplinary lead for digital with a particular focus on digital twin development for reactors and reactor applications. Outside of his work at UKNNL, he chairs a working group for the UK Nuclear Institute developing a guidance framework for the adoption of artificial Intelligence. This group reaches over 150 organizations working in the UK sector.

Dr Paolo Picca
Dr Paolo Picca leads the innovation function at the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). He has over 20 years’ experience in the nuclear sector, including more than a decade as a regulator across new build, operating facilities and decommissioning. Before joining ONR, Paolo worked on international nuclear new-build projects in France and Slovakia. He holds a PhD in reactor physics and has broad technical expertise spanning C&I, PSA, cyber security and AI. Paolo is a Fellow of the Nuclear Institute and serves on boards and steering committees for innovation initiatives at the Nuclear Energy Agency and International Atomic Energy Agency.

Gavin Jones
Gavin Jones leads the management of ART/1, the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB) expert mirror committee responsible for horizontal standards in artificial intelligence (AI). In this role he oversees the full lifecycle of UK participation in the ISO and CEN standards development processes: recruiting and onboarding subject-matter experts, supporting members through formal ISO, CEN and national procedures (including commenting, balloting, working group contribution and strategic standards development) and coordinating positions across BSI and wider UK stakeholder groups in BSI's capacity as the UK NSB. In addition to ART/1, Gavin leads the management responsibility for ICT/4 (quantum technologies), ICT/2 (digital accessibility), AMT/4 (industrial data) and AUS/1 (revision of ISO 19011) — giving him cross-sector visibility across emerging technology standardization at ISO, IEC, CEN and national levels.
Over his 11 years at BSI — in addition to his digital standards expertise — Gavin has managed portfolios spanning the built environment and energy sectors, acquiring deep practical experience in how standards are developed, revised and implemented based on the principle of consensus.
He holds an MBA from the Open University, a BA in English Literature from Royal Holloway, University of London, and is a Member of the British Computer Society through his role at BSI.

Sahar Danesh
Sahar Danesh is Associate Director, Global Digital Governance and Partnership at BSI, where she works within the Strategy and Transformation team to advance BSI's role in shaping international approaches to digital trust and governance for critical and emerging technologies.
