Suicide is a leading cause of death for working-age adults.
Every suicide has a devastating impact on families, colleagues and communities. Workplaces can play a vital role in creating an environment where people feel able to talk, seek help, and be supported. BS 30480 Suicide and the workplace – Intervention, prevention and support for those affected by suicide provides guidance to help employers take action.
By endorsing or pledging to adopt the standard, your organization is making an early and visible commitment to tackling one of the most pressing issues for workplace wellbeing. You can learn more about the standard here.
We’ve established two pathways for organizations to demonstrate leadership on suicide awareness:
Endorsement
Endorsing BS 30480 means you recognize that addressing suicide in the workplace is essential to safeguarding colleagues, reducing overall risk, and building a supportive culture. It is a public signal that your organization is committed, in principle, to aligning with the aims of BS 30480 and that you believe it is a tool for driving change.
Pledge to adopt
Pledging to become an early adopter is a step further; it is a statement of intent to follow the guidance in the standard in your organization. This might include:
- Reviewing the standard and implementing quick wins
- Building suicide prevention into wider well-being strategies
- Nominating suicide prevention advocates
- Commissioning training for all staff, managers and advocates. Review Annex A regarding what considerations need to be covered within training
- Sharing your successes and learnings with us – your insights will help us support others on their journey with BS 30480
