What is ISO 32212?
ISO 32212 provides financial institutions with a globally recognized framework for developing, implementing, and maintaining net zero transition plans.
Developed through international collaboration between financial institutions, policymakers, regulators, standards bodies, and sustainability experts, the standard helps embed climate considerations into governance, strategy, financing decisions, risk management, and organizational oversight.
As transition planning becomes an increasingly important part of financial decision-making, ISO 32212 offers a common reference point that promotes consistency, credibility, and transparency across markets.
Why ISO 32212 matters
Financial institutions play a critical role in financing the transition to a net zero and climate-resilient economy. Yet approaches to transition planning have often varied across institutions, jurisdictions, and frameworks.
ISO 32212 helps address this challenge by providing a globally applicable framework that:
- Establishes principles and requirements for credible transition planning
- Strengthens governance, systems, and controls
- Supports independent assurance through ISO's conformity assessment ecosystem
- Applies to financial institutions of all sizes and business models
- Complements existing initiatives and frameworks, including IFRS/TPT, GFANZ, NZIF, and OECD guidance
By focusing on implementation as well as disclosure, the standard helps financial institutions translate climate commitments into practical action.
The ISO 32212 transition planning process
ISO 32212 treats transition planning as an ongoing management process rather than a one-off exercise.
The standard sets out five interconnected stages that help organizations assess their current position, establish objectives, integrate transition considerations into decision-making, implement actions, and monitor progress over time.
